1. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Study (clinics located in North York)
Inclusion Criteria:
Patient may have newly diagnosed or recurrent milded to moderate UC
Extent of colonic involvement confirmed within the past 36 months by colonoscopy
Male or nonpregnant female subjects aged 18 to 75 years
Exclusion Criteria:
Subjects with short bowel syndrome
Subjects with prior bowel surgery
Subjects with severe/fulminant UC
Subjects with infectious diseases (HIV, HBV or HCV infections)
Subjects intorlerant or allergic to aspirin or salicylates
Subjects with malignancies
Subjects who participated in another clinical study in the last 30 days
2. Gout Study (clinic located in Thornhill)
Patients must be between the ages of 18-75 years old.
Trial length is approximately 13 weeks with an option to extend to 6 months
Male subjects or female subjects with post-menopause or surgical sterility
Patient has to be taking 300 mg of allopurinol for at least 3 months
Cannot have any serious cardiovascular problems
No kidney or liver problems
Patients will be compensated $50.00 and more per clinical visit
3. COPD Studies (clinic located in Mississauga)
Mild COPD Study: current or former smokers with FEV 1 between 40 and 80% of predicted normal value and FEV1/FVC less than 70.
Severe COPD Study: current or former smokers with FEV 1 between 30 and 65% of predicted value and FEV1/FVC less than 70.
Inclusion Criteria:
Patients must be over 40 years of age
Patients must have spirometry test results of the above mentioned criteria
Patients must have history of smoking equal or more than a pack a day for the last 10 years
Patients must have not significant cadriovascular conditions and not on any beta blockers
No history of malignancy in the past 5 years
Exclusion Criteria:
Patients with asthma history or who require regular oxygen therapy
Patients with a BMI greater than 40kg/m2
Patients with uncontrolled diabetes (Hba1c greater than 8).
Patients with lung cancer. Night shift workers.
Patients will be compensated for their time
4. Asthma Study (clinic located in Mississauga)
Patients must be 18 years or age or more
Patients must have history of moderate to severe asthma
Patients must not have smoked in the past year
Patients must have a smoking hisroty of less then a pack a day for 10 years
Patients with no significant cardiovascular conditions and not on any beta blockers
5. Diabetes Study (clinic located in Mississauga)
Patients should be on Metformin only for at least 2 months
Patients will be compensated for their time
Old trials
6. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Study (completed)
Patient has to be a diabetic with peripheral diabetic neuropathy with typical pain, paraesthesia, allodynia etc.
Inclusion Criteria:
Mean Daily Average DPN pain score of at least 4 on an 11-point scale in the baseline period.
Experienced DPN pain on a daily basis for the last 3 months.
Have symptoms of DPN for at least 6 months prior to the study entry (this should be confirmed by the history and findings on the neurological examination.
Patient is willing to discontinue treatment for chronic pain and other prohibited medications.
Have a stable diabetic treatment regimen for the last 3 months prior to screening.
Documented daily average DPN assessments for at least 5 days in the baseline period (daily calls for the duration of the study).
Exclusion Criteria:
There are 33 exclusions which are the standard ones for most of the studies, with some additions:
Currently taking Coumadin.
History of chronic pain (e.g.,joint osteoarthritis or lo back pain) that is more severe than DPN.
Patients will be compensated $50 for the short visits (5 days) or $100 for the long visits (4 days).
7. Migraine Study (completed)
Duration of the study is approximately 8 months (13 clinical visits are included in this duration).Patients will be compensated $50 for each visit.
Inclusion:
Patient must have at least three migraine headache attacks per month.
Patient must have at least four migraine headache days per month but less than 15 total headache days per month.
A history of migraine headaches for at least one year.
Age of onset of migraine headaches was prior to 50 years.
Exclusion:
A history of opioid use for more than 10 days per month.
A history of simple analgesic use for more than 15 days per month.
A history of seizure disorder(s).
A history of cluster headaches or basilar, ophthalmoplegic, hemiplegic, or transformed migraine headaches.
8. Gout Study (completed)
Patients must be between the ages of 18-75 years old.
Trial length is approximately 13 weeks with an option to extend to 6 months.
Male subjects or female subjects with post-menopause or surgical sterility, who are all hyperuricemic.
Patients will be compensated $50.00 and more per clinical visit.
